Wake Up Call To Sleep Better

If you ask anyone who knows me, I absolutely REFUSE to compromise my sleep because I know how much sleep matters for my wellbeing. It is one of those things we all know we need more of, yet continue to neglect. As a society we are simply not getting enough quality sleep which is making us fat, sick, inflamed, and imbalanced. Yikes!

So I decided to do a series on “How To Sleep Better”, where I will sharing some useful tips each time, that help me sleep better. Write to me to tell me about your experience!

Newsflash: Nature designed humans to spend almost a third of our lives sleeping! Yes.

But First, Why Is Sleep So Important?

You may think you’re resting your body, but actually your brain is fulfilling critical tasks from building memories to reinforcing learning to clearing toxins. Sleep allows our brains to undergo a process called “consolidation”, which is when our short-term memories (what recently happened) are processed and stored as long-term memories. So vital for survival!

Serious About Good Sleep? Avoid Blue Light.

If you try just one sleep improvement, make it this one. Junk light, the blue light that emits from your smartphone, laptop, and tablet screens is wrecking your sleep. Too much blue light messes with your brain’s production of melatonin, the hormone that tells your body when it’s time to snooze. Blue light wakes you up and tells your brain that it’s daytime. Try below for protecting your sleep from blue light:

  • Don’t keep phone at your bedside. There is nothing urgent that can’t wait till morning.
  • Unplug unnecessary electronics in your bedroom.
  • Shut down electronic devices at least one hour before bed.
  • Increase the warm light setting on your phone in evening.
  • Wear blue light blocking glasses if you must watch a screen before sleeping.

Does It Matter What You Eat?

While you shouldn’t go to bed with a stuffed stomach, your stomach doesn’t need to be empty either. A growling stomach can definitely keep you awake. Additionally, limiting the sugar you eat, particularly added sugars, helps you sleep better according to the National Sleep Foundation. So if you feel hungry just before bed, have a light and healthy snack that’s not sugar loaded. Our Yoga Superfuel cookies which are low on sugar and slow digesting, are a perfect alternative!

How about having a 2 week sleep challenge where you will keep away your devices at least 1 hour before sleeping and snack only healthy? Write to me to share your experience.
