Our gut is home to some 38 trillion microbes. These ‘good’ germs living in our gut are our main immunity educators with whom we form a lifelong health alliance. The food we eat not only feeds our fat cells, but also determines what kind of microbes we are growing in our guts.
Unfortunately the modern big food industry, propagating highly processed, high-sugar, toxic-ingredients, low-fiber diet has substantially altered our gut bacteria. So getting your gut bacteria healthy is one of the most important things you can do to get and stay healthy.
Gut & Immunity
Our gut wall houses 70% of the cells that make up our immune system. Consider the important jobs our gut performs regularly, including breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, keeping out toxins and producing nutrients. That’s a lot of work! For optimal immunity and nourishment our gut must function seamlessly.
Gut Bacteria Thrive On What We Feed Them
Give them whole, fresh, real foods and good gut bacteria thrive. Feed them junk, and bad bugs flourish, resulting in leaky gut, toxic overload, and inflammation. The good news is that your microbiome changes with every bite of food, so you can positively alter gut flora beginning with your very next meal.
“Harmful Foods” For Your Gut
- Sugary food: Diets with high sugar content (including from refined carbs) cause unhealthy bacteria to thrive inside the gut, causing weight gain and other health conditions.
- Artificial sweeteners: Like Saccharin or aspartame (found in many diet foods), reduce good bacteria in your gut and can lead to high levels of blood sugar.
- Fried Food: Fried foods are often cooked in oils rich in trans fat, are harder for the body to digest & promote the growth of harmful gut bacteria as well.
“Healthy” foods for your gut
- Fibre Rich Foods: Fruits, dark green vegetables, beans, legumes and wholegrains.
- Prebiotic Foods: Foods rich in insoluble fibre that the body does not digest, but the bacteria ferment them and use them for food.g. cooked and cooled white potatoes, banana, lentils, garlic, onion etc.
- Probiotic Foods: Probiotic food contain healthful bacteria good for the gut. E.g. cultured yogurt, fermented vegetables such as tempeh, kimchi, sauerkraut.
Take care of the friendly bacteria in your gut, and they will help take care of you.
